JioHotstar Confirms Its Lead as India's Largest and Most-Used Streaming Platform

JioHotstar has crossed 451 million monthly active users and now leads India's streaming market on both scale and engagement, according to Reliance's 2026 AGM and independent tracking data.

India's streaming landscape has consolidated around a single dominant player faster than almost anyone predicted, and the latest numbers make the scale of that shift hard to ignore. Speaking at Reliance's 2026 Annual General Meeting, Akash Ambani reported that JioHotstar — formed through the roughly ₹70,000-crore-plus merger of Viacom18's JioCinema and Disney's Star India — has reached 451 million monthly active users, alongside claims that the platform's live-streaming capability is setting global benchmarks, citing a 72.5-million-viewer stream for a T20 World Cup final as a world record figure.

Independent data backs the scale claim with an equally striking engagement number. An analysis by BofA Global Research, drawing on Sensor Tower data, found Indian users spend an average of 22 hours and 13 minutes per month on JioHotstar — ahead of Netflix at roughly 19 hours 22 minutes, MX Player at 19 hours 19 minutes, Prime Video at 13 hours 44 minutes, and ZEE5 at just under 11 hours. Other market trackers place JioHotstar's downloads past the one-billion mark on Google Play and note it became the first Indian OTT platform to cross 100 million paid subscribers.

The platform now carries a genuinely broad content mandate spanning IPL and ICC cricket, the Premier League, WWE, Wimbledon, Disney and Marvel originals, and content across 19 Indian languages — a combination that has made it as much a sports and live-event destination as a scripted-content one.

Editorial view: Scale on this order changes the commissioning conversation for everyone in Indian production. When one platform commands close to half a billion monthly users, "made for JioHotstar" starts to function less like a single distribution deal and more like a de facto national release strategy in its own right. For production houses like ours pitching regional and Hindi-language content, that concentration of audience attention is now simply part of the planning math — for better or worse.
