"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Shatters India Box Office Records for a Hollywood Release
Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has posted the highest-ever opening for a Hollywood film in India, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2026 worldwide within its first week.
Hollywood tentpoles have historically struggled to dominate the Indian box office the way home-grown blockbusters do — but Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken that pattern decisively, and trade trackers are calling it one of the standout box-office stories of 2026.
The film's opening-day collection in India came in at roughly ₹61 crore, the highest single-day total ever recorded for a Hollywood release in the country and the second-biggest opening of the year overall, trailing only the Hindi action sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Momentum barely slowed through the opening weekend and first week, and within just seven days of release the film had become the highest-grossing title of 2026 anywhere in the world, surpassing established 2026 hits including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, Project Hail Mary, and The Devil Wears Prada 2.
Both the dubbed Hindi and original English versions performed strongly across major Indian metros, with the film also credited with putting pressure on the theatrical run of home-grown releases sharing its window, including the comedy Dhamaal 4, which saw a marked drop in its fourth week as screens shifted toward the new release.
Editorial view: For years, the conventional wisdom among Indian distributors was that English-language superhero franchises had a hard ceiling here compared to local action and masala entertainers. This release blows a hole in that assumption. The open question now is whether this is a one-off — driven by a beloved character, strong marketing, and a light week of local competition — or a genuine structural shift in how Indian audiences consume global tentpoles day-and-date with the rest of the world. Either way, exhibitors and distributors will be re-running their release-calendar math for the remainder of the year, and studios eyeing the Indian market will be watching this number closely when planning 2027 slates.
